Midges

Anyone who has ever been feasted on by midges will know that they are one of nature’s most annoying pests! Despite their tiny size, they are intensely irritating, attacking and biting humans in damp, warm weather and feasting on their sweat and blood. They are particularly prevalent in parts of Scotland.

It is actually only female midges that bite, which they do to feed their eggs with blood. As they do this they inject saliva into their victim, resulting in an allergic reaction that can affect some people very badly and cause great discomfort. The most common species of midge, Culicoides, also transmits the Blue Tongue virus in sheep and cattle.
