Flea Pest Control Solutions
Fleas are one of the most annoying pests to deal with. Small enough to get around your home without being seen and agile enough to avoid you when you do see them. Vermex offer fast and effective flea pest control services to help treat any size flea problem.
While fleas will commonly be found within your home if you have any pets, you can still discover a flea problem even if you don’t have pets. Past owners could have left behind a flea pest problem or they could be carried into your garden and around your home by animals like foxes, mice, rats and more.
Within the UK, fleas aren’t known to carry many diseases but you should still remain careful, as, while rare, they can still carry typhus and even the plague. Fleas can also pass on parasites such as tapeworm to your pets if ingested during grooming. Fleas are most well-known for their bite, which while painless can result in an itch or sometimes a rash.
If you think you might be suffering from a flea infestation, get in touch with our team who can provide quality flea treatment as well as a free quote on all work undertaken across Northern England – so you can rest easy knowing we’ll take care of the problem without any outrageous fees.
One of the biggest indicators that you may have a potential flea infestation within your home (or commercial business) is if your pets are itching and scratching more than usual. While fleas will feed on human blood, they prefer animal blood, when an adult flea bites it can cause irritation to the skin, causing the area to become itchy. Fleas tend to stick to areas where your pets can’t easily access – this includes behind the head and neck.
While fleas tend to prefer biting their host animal in order to feed on blood, they will also bite humans if given the chance. When not feeding on your pets or yourself, fleas enjoy hiding away in pet bedding, sofas, mattresses and more where they will lay eggs and remain undetected. Like with bed bugs, fleas will leave little red, itchy bites around your ankles, legs and feet – a telltale sign you may have a flea problem.
We would always recommend contacting a professional pest control service that can ensure the problem is treated quickly and effectively before it gets out of hand, while also ensuring your problem is 100% treated. If you know you have a flea problem and wish to try and deal with it yourself there are a number of home flea remedies you can try, including;
- DIY Flea Trap: Create a solution of dish soap and water in a bowl or on a plate and place a small candle in the middle (if supervised at all times to prevent a fire hazard). Place this in the affected area at night and light the candle. This solution acts like glue thanks to its high viscosity.
- Baking Soda: Take some baking soda and sprinkle it onto your carpet and furniture. Rub this into place using a stiff brush before cleaning up using your vacuum cleaner – ensuring to empty the vacuum bag to dispose of any fleas that may not have died during the process.
- Flea Repellant Plants: There are a number of plants that contain specific oils, compounds and chemicals that fleas seem to hate and actively try to avoid. These include; Penny Royal, Chrysanthemums, Lavender & Spearmint.

Flea Species
The most common flea species found within the UK are the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis).
Both of these are extremely common pests whose main primary hosts are, as the names suggest, cats and dogs respectively. While these fleas prefer to feed on their hosts, they will also feed on other hosts such as humans and other animals.
Flea Control - Frequently Asked Quesstions
Fleas are tiny wingless parasites with bodies that can range from brown to reddish-brown in colour. Adult fleas are roughly 2.5mm in length and can be seen with the human eye.
The flea life cycle goes from flea egg to flea larvae where they feed on blood-rich flea faeces before developing into a flea pupa and then adult fleas and can take anywhere between two-three weeks and up to 6 months depending on conditions. Adult cat and dog fleas can live for up to one year in ideal situations.
Fleas will happily live in carpets, sofas, pet bedding, and other soft furnishings when they aren’t feeding on their host.
Fleas require a host in order to survive and will often die anywhere between a few days and a few weeks without a host to feed on.
Female fleas can lay anywhere from a few to 50 eggs per day after they feed. These eggs are tiny white objects roughly 0.5mm in size.
Yes and no. Cat fleas (ctenocephalides felis) and dog fleas (pulex irritans) are technically different species and without a microscopic view, are indistinguishable to the naked human. However, they can infect one another.
