    Why Are Cockroaches Pests?

Cockroaches are considered pests because they carry a number of diseases that can be potentially serious to humans. In addition, the presence of cockroaches in your business can have a serious impact on your reputation as they are considered a sign of dirt and unclean surroundings.

Cockroaches can cause a number of illnesses, such as food poisoning, salmonella, diarrhoea, dysentery and tapeworms by tracking their faeces across your kitchen counter or food. In addition, cockroach droppings, egg cases, skins and saliva are one of the leading causes of allergies in urban areas.

    Types Of Cockroach

There are over 3000 different species of cockroaches across the planet, however, thankfully we only have a few to deal with in the UK. These are the most common species of cockroaches in the UK:

    German cockroach (Blattella Germanica)

German cockroaches are a light yellow/brown with two distinguishable dark stripes. Adults are 10-15mm long and prefer to live and breed indoors and most often found in kitchens or bathrooms.

    American cockroach (Periplaneta Americana)

The largest of the four common species of cockroaches. American cockroaches prefer to breed outside and live on trees. Reddish-brown in colour, these cockroaches can often be found in basements and kitchens.

    Oriental cockroach (Blatta Orientalis)

These are a health concern because they love to feed on garbage and decaying things. The oriental cockroach is a shiny black or dark brown colour and loves cool, damp areas.

    Brown-banded cockroach (Supella Longipalpa)

One of the smallest species of cockroaches at only 10-15mm length. Brown-banded cockroaches usually stay on the ground, however, they have the ability to fly in warmer climates.

    Cockroach Control FAQ

There are many do-it-yourself products available to tackle a cockroach infestation. However, it is often more cost-effective and reassuring to have a professional pest control service to handle your cockroach problem. Get in touch with VermEx on 01904 798676 for a free quote for your business.

Unfortunately, cockroaches are not solitary insects, so if you see one, there are likely to be more you haven’t seen. In addition, if you see a cockroach during the day it often means overcrowding has forced it out into the open, which means you may have a large cockroach infestation on your hands.

Some species of cockroaches common to the UK prefer warmer, damp areas, while others prefer cooler conditions. Cockroaches will have hiding places in cracks and crevices in your home & business, under sinks and countertops, behind cabinets, around plumbing, under floorboards, inside drains and around appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines.
