What are Bed Bugs?

Bed bug infestations are an increasing concern in the UK, particularly in densely populated cities such as Manchester and Leeds. Although they do not pose grave health risks, their stigma can cause home and property owners’ severe stress.

Bed bugs are comparable to apple seeds in terms of shape, size, and colour. As they feed exclusively on the blood of animals and humans, bed bugs congregate and multiply near their host’s prime sleep areas. They are often found hiding in tight, secluded spaces such as sofas, carpets, beds, and mattresses. Bed bugs are difficult to self-exterminate as their flat bodies and large abdomens keep them protected, should anything try to squash them.

There are several signs of bed bugs to look out for. Bed bugs are typically known to bite areas exposed during sleep. This includes the arms, torso, and neck. Other tell-tale signs of bed bugs include blood stains on bed sheets and pillowcases, eggshells, and traces of excrement. It is worth noting that without further evidence beyond bed bug bites, it can be difficult to ascertain whether your home is suffering from a bed bug infestation.

If you are having difficulty identifying a bed bug invasion, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our experts who will be more than happy to discuss your situation and advise the best course of action.

    Bed Bugs UK FAQ

Bed bug infestations are easily transmissible due to their love for travel. They will uninvitedly hitchhike on people, clothing, and other personal belongings, unbeknownst to the traveller. Summer months and hot temperatures also increase bed bug activity and procreation, enabling them to flourish.

Before feeding, bed bugs are almost invisible to the naked eye due to their small size and translucent colouring. However, after feeding, their complexion transforms, exuding reddish-brown tones. Bed bugs typically hide in secluded places and often go unnoticed by humans. Whilst their eggshells and skin sheds are relatively small, they are still visible to the naked human eye.

If you suspect a bed bug infestation in your home, we strongly advise you to remove all bedding including pillows, sheets, and any other removable covers. Vacuuming can also help reduce the number of bugs. Thoroughly vacuum the area surrounding your bed and immediately dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag, in the bin outdoors. While these measures will help control the problem, calling in a professional will exterminate it.

Bedbugs are at their most active during the night as they usually bite their victims while they are sleeping. Bites are often found in groups or lines and can lead to redness and itching. For bed bug treatment, we recommend disinfecting the area with soap and water to prevent infection. To further aid relief, consider taking an oral antihistamine. If itching persists, try applying an OTC calamine lotion to the affected areas.

Carpet beetles are commonly mistaken for bed bugs due to their similarity in size and body shape. However, despite their resemblances in appearance, the carpet beetle is not dangerous and feasts on natural fibres such as carpets and wool.

Although bed bugs and bed mites bear commonalities in appearance, they belong to different classes. Bed bugs are considered as part of the insect class, whilst mites are arachnids –  belonging to the same class as spiders and ticks. Bed bugs are also visible to the naked human eye, whilst mites are not.
